Filters not updating the loop
Symptom
Visitors change a filter (category, price, search, etc.) but the Archive Loop does not change—or the whole page reloads instead of updating via AJAX.
Likely causes and fixes
Filter Posts not linked to the Archive Loop
Filter Posts must target the Archive Loop on the same page (same filter group / loop ID).
- Edit the page in the block editor.
- Select Filter Posts and confirm the linked loop in block settings.
- Select Archive Loop and note its identifier matches.
- Save and test again.
REST API blocked or cached
Filtering uses the WordPress REST API. Hosts or plugins that block REST routes break AJAX updates.
- Open browser Developer Tools → Network while changing a filter.
- Look for failed requests to
/wp-json/paths. - Exclude REST and AJAX filter endpoints from full-page cache and firewall rules.
- Review Caching and performance.
JavaScript conflict
Another plugin or theme script may throw errors before filter scripts run.
- Open Console in Developer Tools on the filter page.
- Fix or disable the conflicting script.
- Test with a default theme (e.g. Twenty Twenty-Four) to isolate theme issues.
Apply button mode
If Filter Posts requires an Apply button, changing a checkbox alone may not update until the visitor clicks Apply. Confirm Update on change settings match your expected UX.
Multiple filter modules on one page
More than one Filter Posts block can conflict if both target the same loop without intentional sync settings. Use one filter panel per loop unless your layout deliberately uses synchronized panels.
Still not working?
- Clear site, CDN, and browser cache.
- Regenerate permalinks: Settings → Permalinks → Save (no changes needed).
- Post on the WordPress.org support forum with Network tab screenshots of failed requests.
